Predictable Stop Kit

Public transport stops fail people every day because of how they are built. Information is often missing, hard to access, or given in only one format. For millions of disabled and neurodiverse passengers, that means missed services, anxiety and journeys not taken.

The Predictable Stop Kit is our attempt to fix that.

What it is

The Predictable Stop Kit is a modular device that retrofits onto existing, bus stops, train stations, and tram stops. It adds accessibility features and delivers real-time travel information in multiple formats at once, with no smartphone, app, or setup required from the user.

It is designed for people with visual, auditory, cognitive and mobility-related access needs, and anyone else waiting at the stop can use it too.

How it works

The Predictable Stop Kit pulls live departure data from open transport feeds and delivers it in six ways:

• A high-contrast e-ink display, readable in direct sunlight, rain glare, and low light

• Audio announcements with automatic volume adjustment for background noise

• Bluetooth direct to hearing aids, headphones and earbuds

• An induction loop for hearing aid users who prefer a loop to a Bluetooth connection

• A Braille stop code, giving the stop name and reference number in Braille

• A tactile push button for on-demand information, with light and sensory feedback

There is no proprietary ecosystem and no extra device to carry. The kit fits onto existing stop infrastructure and uses public data.

Built with disabled people

The Predictable Stop Kit is codesigned with a panel of people with lived experience of disability and neurodiversity. Their input has shaped every feature decision, including what went into the current build and what we left out. The design reflects what they told us works for them.

Where we are

The Predictable Stop Kit is supported by the National Centre for Accessible Transport. We're currently in Phase 2, building and testing a production-spec pre-demonstrator unit ahead of live trials in Phase 3.
